The euro recently fell for the first time below the minimum limit of SFr1.20 ($1.31 ) set by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) in September 2011.

However, currency experts agree that the temporary slip that occurred during Easter week does not require a change in exchange rate policy.

Thomas Jordan, vice-president and interim president of the SNB, defended his institution at the start of this week and said that doubts about the exchange rate policy were “unfounded”.

Jordan repeated the central bank’s willingness “to buy foreign currency in unlimited amounts” in order to keep the franc within the specified limits. He also confirmed that the Swiss currency “remained overvalued”.

His explanation came after a few financial transactions on April 5 jolted the Easter-time lack of currency movement, causing the euro to trade at SFr1.19. It was the first time the franc had fallen below the minimum limit established by the SNB seven months ago.

According to industry analysts, the volatility was caused partly by economic problems in Spain. Last weekend, Swiss publications such as the “Finanz und Wirtschaft” newspaper criticised the SNB for “going on holiday” when the going got tough.

Facebook has teamed up with five security vendors to offer a range of free and subscription-based antivirus packages.

Microsoft, McAfee, TrendMicro, Sophos, and Symantec are now part of Facebook’s third party security providers, offering a range of antivirus packages for Windows and Mac users.

The vendors have become part of the social network’s “Facebook Security Family”, which could be a major boon for security vendors who now may reach Facebook’s 900 million users.

The new security family is an addition to Facebook’s anti-scam program, which includes partnerships with Web of Trust, and its own internally developed URL screening program assisted by McAfee, Google, and Websense.

Facebook promotes the products as “free”, however some, such as Symantec’s Norton and McAfee, similar to pre-installed desktop antivirus trial versions, must be paid for after 6 months, while Microsoft’s Security Essentials for Windows and Sophos’Home Edition for Macs are actually free products.

The vendors, most of whom already have a significant following community on Facebook, have been invited to contribute to Facebook’s security blog.

(Bloomberg) — Japan’s proposed incentives for renewable energy will boost solar panel installations and help wean the nation off nuclear power, industry lobby groups and developers said.

A government panel Wednesday recommended solar power providers earn 42 yen (52 U.S. cents) a kilowatt-hour for the electricity they produce, three times the 13.65 yen charged to industrial and commercial users, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The preferential rate, known as a feed-in tariff, for solar power was recommended for 20 years.

“The start of the feed-in tariff program will be a major step forward to expand the solar power market,” said Tetsuo Kuba, president of Kyocera Corp., a solar panel maker. “We will expand our businesses in the mega-solar market,” Kuba said in a statement.

The panel’s recommendation, which must be approved by Industry Minister Yukio Edano, marks another step in scaling back atomic power following the disaster at the Fukushima Dai- Ichi Plant last year and reducing carbon emissions linked to fossil fuel use.

Japan currently gets about 9% of its electricity from renewables. The government’s feed-in tariffs will require power utilities to pay above-market rates for electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

Self-confessed terrorist Anders Behring Breivik has been found to be addicted to computer games (spending thousands of hours playing war games) years prior to his bombing and killing on July 22.



Authorities have discovered computer logs that show Breivik has spent 8,700 hours playing war games from 2006 to 2010. In fact, records show that he played 500 hours of World of Warcraft between November 2010-April 2011 alone. Aside from playing WoW, Breivik was also into Elder Scrolls, Modern Warfare, Warhammer and Dragon Age. According to him, he spent all his time playing in the months prior to his July 22 attacks.



Breivik started playing WoW in 2006 and authorities are inclined to believe that he played the game for up to 12 hours per day in a 2-year period. It should also be noted that he used terms from the game in the ‘manifesto’ he wrote. According to Breivik, playing war games was only to hide his terrorist plans. He added that he devoted almost one year in playing games to reward himself.



Now, police are trying to investigate if Breivik has been in touch with other gamers or if he belongs to a player group through obtaining information from game manufacturers. This is because certain information show that he has been logged onto 2 computer units at the same time — Breivik might have paid others to play on behalf of him.

In four years I have written 17 personal cheques - you know the ones, bits of paper where you write the amount in words and figures and sign your name at the bottom. Invariably, I try to pay everything I can online.

So it was with some degree of personal satisfaction that I read in a column by Mark Ward, from BBC Technology, that companies that do not do enough to keep their websites secure are to be named and shamed to help improve security.
The list of good and bad sites will be published regularly by the non-profit Trustworthy Internet Movement (TIM).

The new Norton computer safety software I am trialling has an app that scans the site you go to and shows, through the use of green bars in the browser menu bar, how safe that site is before you log on.

Bank sites are always rated four green bars, even with the amount of spam received from outfits purporting to be banks.

On that note, last week I received alerts from ASB, ANZ, Kiwibank and BNZ that my account was in danger of being either closed, invaded or unable to receive a large refund from the IRD. Only one those banks holds my accounts so I phoned to make sure that it was indeed a scam. The bank assured me that the email was a scam and that no-one would send out a note asking me how I was.

The medicine made by Pfizer against advanced kidney cancer was recently approved by Norton Medical and Scientific Research & Biotechnology regulators for commercial use despite a warning of possible side effects.
On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the drug (with the generic name of axitinib) is effective in curing patients who do not show response to other drugs against kidney cancer.
The advance stage of kidney cancer usually begins in the lining of the kidney's tubes. Inlyta does its work by blocking specific receptors that are involved in the growth of tumor.
According to FDA, Inlyta is already the seventh drug it approved to cure advanced cancer of the kidney since 2005.

The FDA approval has come as a welcome opportunity for Pfizer since they have lost revenue from their cholesterol drug, Lipitor, after generic counterparts started to come out last year.
