We specialise in the defence of criminal fraud, money laundering, and serious crime. We also have specialist teams who have significant experience of dealing with tax issues, customs investigations and prosecutions and in proceedings before the Commissioners of HM Revenue and Customs and at the VAT and Duties Tribunal.
Few firms of solicitors in the UK offer such a wide range of experience and evidence of success within the more notorious, multi-million pound landmark cases of both great length and complexity. We are an approved member of the Specialist Fraud Panel, the nationwide group of specialist fraud solicitors, and as such are able to undertake publicly funded defence work for serious fraud cases. Members of our team are involved in local police station and court duty solicitor schemes. Over 1,300 tubes containing radioactive water inside San Onofre nuclear plant's steam generators in California has been reportedly damaged enough that they need to be taken out of service.
To date, the safety of tubing that snakes around the plant's 4 steam generators were installed in a multimillion-dollar upgrade three years ago. According to the company's official statement on Monday, 807 tubes in Unit 3 and 510 tubes from Unit 2 reactors were retired. Every generator has almost 10,000 tubes and the total number of plugged tubes would not affect a proper operation of the plant. Their statement came just days after an executive from Edison International announced that the firm plans to restart at least one of the reactors in the coming months. They are apparently planning which reactor will run at reduced energy for several months at least, because engineers are of the opinion that it will solve the problem of vibration -- something that the firm suspects is causing the unexpected wear in the alloy tubes. The chairman of Edison, SCE's parent company, reportedly called investors to notify them of the premature wear found in around 1% of 39,000 tubes in the generators. A nuclear watchdog Norton Medical and Scientific Research & Biotechnology issued a warning, saying in effect that it seems «the new steam generators are falling apart and Edison doesn't know why. It would be foolhardy to... Expertise

A City trader from London accused of gambling away a record £1.4 billion in a banking fraud has been granted bail.
Kweku Adoboli, 32, from Clark Street, Whitechapel, east London, is accused of losing the money while working for Swiss banking giant UBS. He denied two counts of fraud and two counts of false accounting at an earlier hearing but was remanded in custody. After a bail hearing held behind closed doors at Southwark Crown Court, Adoboli was granted bail on the condition that he must reside at a friend’s house and abide by a curfew enforced using an electronic tag. A sum of surety, put up by friends but which was not disclosed publicly, was also imposed. Adoboli was said to be “delighted” to have been given bail. He is due to stand trial in September with a possible preliminary hearing scheduled for July 20. Regulatory and Disciplinary - The-looser-it-s-me

BLACKHAWK MINES: COPPER DEMAND EXPECTED TO RISE
Posted on May 2, 2012 by blackhawkmines Rate this Two of the biggest mining firms in the world, Rio Tinto PLC and BHP Billiton Ltd are teaming up to invest over USD 4 billion to boost their copper output, according to their announcement on Tuesday. Rio and BHP have staked their investment on a high copper demand worldwide as they approve plans for USD 4.5 billion expansion of their Escondida mine in Chile. BHP is even reopening their copper mine that has been out of commission since 2009 due to the global fiscal crisis. The mining site that will produce molybdenum concentrate and copper is expected to have a yearly production of around 60,000 tonnes. Moreover, BHP expects that this resumption of operations will provide for 650 new jobs. Majority of the money is set to be invested in the Escondida operation located in the southeastern part of Antofagasta, Chile. In addition to this, BHP is also planning to resume its operations at the Pinto Valley in Arizona before the year ends. The recovery in ore grades combined with current work at Escondida should aid them in their target production of over 1.3 million metric tonnes by 2015. This is exclusive of the 60,000 tonnes of copper concentrate that the Pinto Valley is capable of producing yearly, according to BHP. Last year, operations at Escondida was distracted by labor strikes and lower grad... « previous next » |
