6/6/2012 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AFNS) -- Hanscom Air Force Base's newest office building earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR certification May 31.

The certifcate signifies that Building 1604 performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

"We're pleased to accept EPA's ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts," said Tom Schluckebier, a base civil engineer. "Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs."

Commercial buildings that earn EPA's ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Building 1604 uses 39 percent less energy per square foot and is at the national median for similar facilities, Schluckebier said.

Following the results of an energy audit, the Logan-Rogersville School District is taking steps towards saving energy and power.
The audit, which was held only at the Upper-Elementary School, is an effort put forth by the Webster County Cooperative.

Bobbi Ragsdale, the cooperative’s office manager, said essentially the school didn’t have to pay a penny for the audit, which has an estimated cost of $6,000. She said the company that handles the power for the cooperative; Associated Electric has rebates associated with the audit so that their company shares the expense with the local cooperative, while the schools’ fees are waved.
The audits are available to schools and commercial businesses in the area, Ragsdale said.
“The audit shows how reduces the reduction of electric energy being used can help the business or school to be more power efficient,” Ragsdale said.
Even thought the audit results rated the energy efficiency at the building to be fairly good, there were still possible improvements noted. The big money saver for LRUE was the replacement of the school's boiler, which according to Shawn Randles, the assistant superintendent, needed to be replaced anyway.
Replacing the boiler is the only step the Board of Education has formally taken since the audit. The board voted unanimously during their April meeting to replace the boiler for $35,140.
According to the audit’s summary, the new boiler will pay for i...

How Gundersen Lutheran Health System Will Be Energy Independent by 2014

Imagine, for a moment, a hospital that is able to provide its own energy through new renewable energy projects like biofuels and solar power and improved energy efficiency efforts. In other words, the hospital will never have to pay another energy bill again. Sounds a little far-fetched, right?

Well, it's not far-fetched at all. In fact, officials at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wis., are trying to make their health system 100 percent energy independent — meaning they will be completely self-sufficient on all their energy needs — by 2014.

Biomass Energy Co-operative secures first contract

fedsxR5L7Business is hotting-up for a new Bury-based energy co-operative which has secured its first contract. The organisation will install a biomass boiler and viewing room at a church and social club in Ellesmere Port, Merseyside.

Following a chance discussion at a football game, Grant Miller, Chris O'Connor and Ricky Davies registered as a co-operative, with support from The Co-operative Enterprise Hub, and set about turning their 'energy' for renewables into their day job.

Over a 20 year period it is predicted that the church's investment in its new energy system – through funds provided by the government's Renewable Heat Incentive – will see a return that not only covers installation and fuel costs, but also generates a surplus income of over £130,000.

The biomass boiler will burn locally sourced wood shavings and pellets. It is estimated that this will reduce the church's CO2 emissions by more than 580 tonnes over 20 years. Ash produced will be given to horticulturalists as a component for composts.

In addition to providing energy savings, the focus of the Biomass Energy Co-operative is to promote a transition to a lower carbon economy while contributing to wider environmental improvements. It offers a free feasibility study service and supplies and installs the latest heating systems to commercial buildings, residential homes, schools, community buildings and large domestic properties across the north west. ...

How to... save energy without breaking the bank

Energy-saving products have come a long way since the brick-in-the-cistern days, yet some things such as draught excluders remain just as good an idea today as they were hundreds of years ago. One thing that's certain is that gas and electricity bills are going up constantly, so it pays to make use of smart innovations and old tricks alike if you want to stay one step ahead of the energy companies. It's easy to overlook all the little things around the home - radiators, windows, even your letterbox - that could do with a little help to make your home as efficient as possible but that doesn’t mean you should. Here’s how to save money and the planet at the same time:

Radiators
Radiators aren’t always the most efficient way to heat a house but there are quite a few products out there that can make them a bit more so - and save you cash on your heating bills. Most are mounted on walls, which means they lose quite a bit of heat through the wall itself - even more if you don't have cavity wall insulation. Heat-reflecting foil is a simple way around this. Rolls of combined insulating and heat-reflecting foil can be found at most major DIY chains, and can make a big difference to your home's efficiency if applied to all radiators around the house.

Another solution is Ecofreak.co.uk's Radiator Booster MK3, £24.95, which effectively turns your radiator into a convection heater by using a miniature fan to distribute warm air more evenly around th...
