Almost every year from July to October, Canadian music legend Anne Murray returns to picturesque Pugwash, N.S., where she spent her summers as a child. She practises her swing at the local first-class golf course and marvels at the way the little place she’d visit to attend church on Sundays has blossomed into a tourist destination — a jewel along the Northumberland Strait.

Nearby is Fox Harb’r, the luxury golf course and resort owned by Tim Hortons’ magnate Ron Joyce, another kid from Nova Scotia’s northwestern shore made good.

Now, the area’s two most celebrated icons are publicly disagreeing over wind turbine construction in the area after the Snowbird singer publicly spoke out against a 12-turbine wind farm proposed for two kilometres outside Pugwash.

Troy, MI -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2012 -- NASA has recently admitted that most of the moon rocks brought to Earth from 2 Apollo space missions are missing.

Richard Nixon, who was then the US president, ordered the rock to be broken up into small fragments and sent to 135 foreign leaders and 50 local states. The 370 pieces of lunar rock from the 1969 and 1972 missions were collected to be given as gifts to different countries.

Every goodwill moon rock was encased in lucite ball and placed on a wooden plaque with the receiving country's flag.

A hundred of those were distributed to the 50 states of the US while 270 were given to various countries as a goodwill gift. To date, 184 of the goodwill rocks are unaccounted for (lost or stolen) -- 24 in the US and 160 worldwide. Some of the goodwill rocks have gone missing during times of political transition or revolution.

BROOKSVILLE --
Authorities arrested a man accused of scamming a woman into paying him for roof repair and bolting with the money without doing any work.

Detectives said it's possible the suspect could have targeted more people in Hernando County.

Leonard Lovell, 42, who has a criminal history in three other states, was arrested this week in connection with the scam. He remained in custody in Alabama as of Thursday afternoon, deputies said.

On Jan. 12, an 88-year-old woman who lives in the area of U.S. 19 in Spring Hill, answered a knock on her door and encountered Lovell, who was soliciting roof work, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect told the woman her roof needed fixing and he would do it for about $70. She agreed and two men – including Lovell – returned to the house later to do the job. One got on the roof and the other spoke with the woman, presumably to distract her, deputies said.

A short time later, both suspects told the woman the job would cost $321. The woman felt "pressured" and she paid Lovell, according to the sheriff's office.

The check was cashed almost immediately and the men didn't return, deputies said.

The woman's son came to her house later and noticed the men didn't perform any work at all.

Crackdown on synthetic marijuana

posted by hannahbrooklyn 18 days ago under springhill group, south korea, crackdown on synthetic marijuana
SPRING HILL - Brightly colored packages of potpourri can be found at many convenience stores -- and most of them are illegal.

Last year, Florida banned some of the ingredients found in the potpourri because it is being used like marijuana. When the synthetic marijuana is used as pot, it can be dangerous.

"It has a tendency to be more likely to lead to psychosis and sometimes prolonged psychosis," according to Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis.

Emergency rooms are beginning to report more cases of people with bizarre side effects related to the use of fake marijuana, sometimes called K-2.

"These manufacturing conditions are not up to pharmaceutical grade," Sheriff Nienhuis added.

This week, deputies fanned out across the county to visit 130 convenience stores. Deputy Steve Snell is one of the deputies checking the shelves.

"We're going around to all our convenience stores our retailers that might be selling this type of product and trying to inform them what law changes have taken place," Snell said.

Snell will deliver a page-long warning letter. It lists the ingredients in potpourri that are now banned.

"This letter is to inform you of recent changes in the Florida State Statutes which specifically address the possession of chemicals in synthetic Marijuana (commonly referred to as Spice or K-2)."

The letter goes on the warn the "...chemicals are now outlawed ...

Safety of intersection has become priority

posted by allanbrooks03 18 days ago under springhill group, south korea, safety of intersection has become priority
Spring Hill leaders have made the safety of the U.S. Highway 169 intersection with 199th Street a top priority.
A joint resolution was approved Feb. 9 by the city of Spring Hill, Spring Hill USD 230 and the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce. The resolution states that the entities “jointly express support for measures that increase the safety of the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and 199th Street through the efforts of the Kansas Department of Transportation, Board of County Commissioners, Johnson County, Public Works and the Kansas Legislature.”
The intersection has seen an increasing number of accidents, some resulting in fatalities. The intersection was a topic of a town hall meeting in Spring Hill on Jan. 19. Some ideas suggested have been rumble strips, flashing lights, or a warning signal tied to the light that would give drivers a heads up whether it was green or red ahead.
Spring Hill officials recently discussed their safety concerns during their annual trip to Topeka last month to meet with members of the Johnson County legislative delegation, and the topic also was discussed during Saturday’s legislative breakfast in Osawatomie.
