WATERLOO, Iowa --- The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office is warning residents after a local woman became the target of a scam.
The woman received a call from a female claiming to be her granddaughter. The caller said she was in jail in Mexico and needed $5,500 sent by Visa credit card or money order to pay her legal fees. The transfer was to be made out to her alleged attorney, according to the sheriff's office.
The victim claimed that the caller sounded like her granddaughter.
The woman later contacted her son and granddaughter and found out she was at home and not in Mexico, the sheriff's office said.
It wasn't immediately clear if the woman paid the money requested.
Deputies warn residents to beware of similar calls and caution against giving personal information such as Social Security or bank account numbers.
Contact your local Law Enforcement Agency to report any similar crimes.
