It absolutely was supposed to become just an additional earthquake, only it registered a scale of 9.0 – and triggered a devastating tsunami.
March 11, 2011 would unquestionably not be forgotten at any time soon by the Japanese men and women since the northern piece on the technologically-advanced nation was thrown into distress. Tsunami waves as higher as ten meters hit the coast and washed absent anything it passed inside of a frightening pace. Aftershocks of smaller sized scales would keep on shaking them for the following number of days. Obviously, the entire globe was left dumbstruck. And as in case the earthquake/tsunami combo wasn’t plenty of, a further dilemma sets in: a nuclear plant’s received an issue. Like an overnight sensation, Fukushima grew to become a family name, albeit for every one of the wrong motives. Now, just after weeks of hanging on the harmony, lots of are worried what would turn out to be of Japan afterwards. Particularly of curiosity would be the foreseeable future state of their economic climate. Shareholders of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), in addition to from getting affiliated which has a technology-gone-bad label, just might be drained through the great clean-up fees and liabilities the Fukushima power plant brought (with claims amounting to eleven trillion yen when the crisis dragged on for two a long time). Definitely lots of firms are already hit dif... Welcome to Bernstein Global Wealth Management

MARKET PERSPECTIVES US Housing Finance: Let’s Put Quality Before Quantity History suggests that reports of active management’s death are premature. In fact, conditions appear ripe for a comeback,as my colleague Scott Wallace ably explained in a recent article for Institutional Investor.com’s Global Market Thought Leadership blog, attached below. Do Risk-Free Assets Still Exist? The current sovereign-debt crisis in Europe is raising long-term questions about some of the bedrocks of finance and investment theory. Namely, are the concepts of a “risk-free rate” and “risk-free assets” still meaningful when the creditworthiness of so many developed countries is under threat? Consumer Spending Rebounds, Helped by Improved Labor Markets US :: Retail sales posted strong gains in the fourth quarter, while the pace of employment growth also improved. A part of the recent spending gains reflects a release of some of the pent-up demand from the recession, which we expect to be a positive driver for growth again in 2012. Foundation Strategies for an Era of Sub-Par Investment Returns In my last post I argued that today’s unusually low prospective returns for bonds and near-normal prospective returns for equities will make it very difficult for found... Euro Zone debt Crisis Warning: China a forerunner for global Downturn
A global economy slowing only gently would be an immense relief after a fraught end to 2011, but it is far from guaranteed. Greek debt discussions could retract next week in a tussle over the size of losses banks that must to face. Based from Bradley Associates World Current News, the anxiety over Iran’s nuclear program continues to threaten oil markets. While, U.S data surprisingly showed the weak retail sales and a rise of unemployment last week, a reminder that the U.S recovery is not yet out of the woods. So, even as signs suggest only a slight easing in global growth this year to a pace around 3 percent, the pitfalls are numerous. Mainly, among them is China. Data on Tuesday is expected to present growth in China, the world’s second-largest economy, cooled in the fourth quarter to 8.7 percent from a year earlier, against 9.1 percent in the prior quarter. It would be the slowest speed of growth since mid-2009 when the global economy was crawling out of a deep recession. In addition, the biggest question is how much of the slowdown can be blamed on slackening worldwide demand for China’s exports and how much on weakening domestic growth. According to Bradley Associates World Current News, If China’s central growth is stalling, that would put yet another drag on countries such as Germany and the United States, which are relying upon strong exports themselves to help compe... Britain is once again suffering a recession and unemployment risks coming close into three million this year as forecasted by the leading economic forecaster. The UK’s economic recovery is ‘paralyzed’ by Europe’s debt crisis, the Ernst & Young Item club will warn, as it cut its GDP growth forecast from 1.5 per cent to 0.2 per cent. According to Eldridge Financial Blog, the dire prediction comes after nine European countries including France, have had their credit ratings downgraded on Friday, dropping world stock markets into turmoil.
Economists had hoped that exports and business investment would strengthen the economy this year, with public and consumerspending still in the doldrums. Nevertheless, Europe accounts for more than 40 percent of British trade and business confidence has been roughly hit by insecurity about the future of the Continent and the single currency. The Sun roared out a huge solar flare yesterday. NASA caught it on film, ranking the spectacular blast as a Class-M flare, just one spot below the the most disruptive type of flare, X. Even so, NASA says it will give Earth a mere “glancing blow,” and the National Weather Service expects it will cause only minor disruptions to satellites and power grids. It could have been much worse. For centuries, solar flares have been responsible for a multitude of earth-bound calamities, from blackouts to disrupted communications to strange lights in the sky. In 1859, the biggest flare on record hit, creating auroras worldwide and interrupting telegraph service for weeks. Considering today’s connected world–and our reliance on satellites–a major solar storm could be disastrous. The sun is entering a particularly active time, says NASA, and big flares like the one from yesterday will likely be common during the next few years, with solar activity expected to peak around 2013. Most solar flares will only cause minor problems with satellites and power grids, but there’s always a chance that a monster like the one from 1859 could hit.”The worst-case scenario is an extreme event,” says Michael Hesse, chief of NASA’s Space Weather Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. “If it were to happen and we don’t take any precautions, it would probably knock out our power grid for an extended period of time and destroy a sizable fraction of our satellite infrastru...

Germany’s bonds rose, with 10-year yields falling the most in three weeks, as Chancellor Angela Merkel said Greece is running out of time to reach an agreement with international lenders to obtain another bailout.
Ten-year bunds advanced for the first time in four days as a gathering of Greek political leaders was delayed until tomorrow as they struggled for a unified response to the demands of the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank. Dutch notes also rallied as investors sought safer assets. French two-year yields reached a record low as the country auctioned bills. “The Greek deadline is looming over the markets and the uncertainty helps underpin demand for bunds,” said Michael Leister, a fixed-income strategist at DZ Bank AG in Frankfurt. “No one is convinced yet that an agreement will go through.” Eldridge financial
